Pocket Gamer Awards 2012 – Connect2Media Receive 2 Nominations

14 Feb

It’s that time of year again! When the red carpets are getting unfurled, the champagne is being poured, and envelope manufacturers are being rushed off their feet. That’s right, it’s awards season.

This year, Connect2Media has been nominated for not one, but two games in the Mobile Game of the Year category in the 2012 Pocket Gamer Awards. Both Farm Frenzy 2 and Square King both received nominations in the category, so now it’s just a game of wait and see. Both nominations mean a lot to us, and it’s truly an honour to be in a category that includes so many other incredible games, and to have been nominated in the awards in the first place!

It’s part 2 of our Pocket Gamer Awards showcase this week, and this time we’re looking at another winner, 365 Board Games!

A single game pack with bags of value that offered up to 7 games, user customisable rules and 3 levels of difficulty, the game was a massive hit for board game lovers everywhere. As Pocket Gamer put it,

“the sheer range of content on offer will keep mobile boardgamers grinning.”

And it certainly had them grinning enough to give the game a bronze award. However, they did point out there was some room for improvement so we hit the drawing board and came back with the much improved 365 Board Games 2 in beautiful high definition!

This sequel will not only feature up to 10 classic board games including Snakes and Ladders, Ship Wars (Battleships), Four in a Row, Chess, Backgammon, Ludo, Checkers, Reversi, Nine Men’s Morris, and Tic Tac Toe, but we’ve also created a multiplayer option so you can play with up to 3 friends on the same phone!

Each game has fully customisable rules, and with improved HD graphics, it’s the perfect Christmas board game collection to play during the holiday season. In fact, we know that 365 Board Games 2 is so cool that you’ll want to tell everyone about it, so now you can brag about your wins on Facebook!

Spotlight on… Call of Atlantis

10 Jun

Atlantis is the legendary lost civilisation first mentioned by the famous philosopher Plato as far back at 360BC. Nobody knows the supposed location for sure, with theories ranging from Antarctica toIreland, and Sweden to the Bermuda Triangle! Even today, historians can’t decide whether it was ever real at all, or simply myth.

One thing that we do know for definite about Atlantis however, is that it makes a pretty addictive mobile video game!

Call of Atlantis is a casual puzzle game with a combination of match-three, hidden object and adventure, with of course that fascinating twist of Ancient history.

Originally on PC, the title has clocked up a staggering 10,000,000 downloads, and more than 35,000,000 people play the browser version. To put this into perspective, if you laid that many mobile phones end to end, you’d get halfway round the world!

Now on Mobile!

When the game was brought to iPhone it proved just as popular, hitting the app charts in numerous countries. And this month, the blockbuster title comes to JAVA, BREW and Android, so that you too can play the game on the move!

“An exceptionally polished and professional match-3 port” AppSafari.com

Igor Bukhman, Co-Founder and President of Playrix, who developed the game, said:

“We are very excited to see Call of Atlantis launch on different platforms including Android. From new exciting mini-games designed for touch screen to advanced quality standards as far as game graphics are concerned, Call of Atlantis promises to be a rewarding gaming experience for anyone who decides to give it a try.”

So remember to look out for the game on your phone, and tell us over on Facebook what you think of it!

Spotlight on… Top Trumps

25 May

If you haven’t been ‘trumping’ your opponents since about the age of six, then where have you been? Top Trumps have now racked up a dizzying 50 million packs sold, throughout Europe,USA,Australia and Japan. For those of you that somehow don’t know, in Top Trumps you basically have to choose the best stat from a card, and cross your fingers that have beaten your rival. If you win, you get their card, and you keep going till you’ve won the entire deck.

However, there are three things you might not know about the famous game:

  1. The original Top Trumps were launched in 1977, and covered thrilling topics such as ‘military hardware’ and ‘modes of transport’!
  2. Many of the packs have become sought after collectors’ items, but the rarest is the ‘wedding pack’ distributed by the director of Winning Moves (the maker of the Top Trumps games) to guests at his wedding.
  3. You can get Top Trumps on your mobile! Yes, that’s right, here at Connect2Media we have teamed up with Winning Moves to bring you a series of the classic games, starting with 007 and NBA.

Shaken not Stirred

007 The Best of Bond, the first game to be released in the mobile series, celebrates the longest running film franchise in cinema history. It covers every official Bond movie ever made and includes iconic characters from Sean Connery and Daniel Craig, to Miss Moneypenny and Goldfinger.

Mark Hauser, Commercial & Licensing Manager for Winning Moves, said:

“Bond is one of our most popular properties and works perfectly as a Top Trumps game. The mobile version is bound to appeal across the board as the Bond franchise is as strong today as it was in 1962 when the first movie hit the big screen”.

Our newest release is Top Trumps NBA, and features 30 giants from the greatest league in the world, with up-to-date official stats. Great for tuning up your basketball knowledge – for example did you know that Andrea Bargnani from the Toronto Raptors is a massive 7 foot tall? You certainly wouldn’t lose him in a crowd!

Listen to Will Luton and Daniel Twomey from Mobile Pie talking about the development of the game in their ‘developer’s diary’ below:

Mobile Gaming Weekly Round-Up

18 May

It’s been an interesting news week in the mobile gaming world, from shiny new statistics on the growth of Android, to scientific discoveries on how to charge your phone. But don’t worry if you’ve missed it – catch up on the good bits in our weekly round-up blog:

Android, Android, and…. Android

Androids taking over

Following Google’s I/O conference on Tuesday, we’ve been swamped with stats on the meteoric rise of Android… even if they do say so themselves! A staggering 400,000 devices are being activated every day, with a grand total so far of 100 million. They’ve also seen 4.5 billion app downloads, which in our eyes equates to a lot of hours of gaming!

Google also announced a new operating system in the pipeline, with the very summery and hunger inducing name, ‘Ice Cream Sandwich’. This aims to bring more multitasking and richer widgets to your phone, which is never a bad thing.

Since the conference we have been hearing a lot of predictions for Android’s future. Nvidia CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang, thinks that Android tablets will overtake the iPad in just three years. Our followers on Twitter took difference stances on the subject, with some saying iPads will continue to rule, and others predicting a faster rise for Android. What do you think? Post your comments below.

Science buffs in South Koreahave found a way to recharge batteries using just the power of human voice. Apparently it works by turning sound into electricity by using strands of zinc oxide sandwiched between two electrodes, and would be charged by conversations, background noise and music.

A prototype of the technology was able to convert sound of around 100 decibels – the equivalent of noisy traffic – to generate 50 millivolts of electricity, which sadly isn’t enough to charge your phone at the moment, but the scientists hope to improve it in the near future.

This sounds to us like a great excuse to shout at our phones after being eaten by sharks in Parachute Panic!

Your world in 3D

LG Optimus 3D

The LG Optimus 3D was shown off to a number of lucky developers at Google’s conference, and from what we’ve heard it’s all looking very positive. Three facts which have got us very excited here at Connect2Media are:

  1. It is the world’s first full 3D smartphone, and has a 4.3” 3D LCD touch screen that allows you to view 2D up to 1080p and 3D up to 720p
  2. It has a 3D 5MP camera that lets you capture and record in 3D, and then upload to YouTube’s 3D channel
  3. And… you don’t need any 3D glasses!

Which we think all makes for a very interesting 3D gaming experience. Stephen Hey, marketing manager here at Connect2Media, says:

“The LG Optimus 3D offers some interesting opportunities for us a a games developer and publisher. I think, importantly, it shows how far handset technology has come and how fast we can match more conventional game consoles. The Nintendo 3DS has hardly been out for a few months and yet here is a handset with similar 3D tech. With handsets like this, and the advances in mobile chip technology, we will be matching the power of current home consoles very soon.”

So which games are you most looking forward to seeing in 3D?

China’s path of domination reaching the gaming market….

23 Feb

Utilizing the power of social networks and mobile technology, China is about to overtake America as the largest gaming market in the world.

A report from Digi-Capital makes the prediction that China’s total revenue from games will grow to around $22bn by 2014 and represent a quarter of the world’s gaming revenues (from its current position of around 12%). This will be taken from the share currently held by the US, taking them down from 26% to 22%.

This growth will be fuelled by the rapid growth in online and mobile games, within whichChinais the leading world player. At the same time, predicts Digi-Capital, sales of traditional console games will remain flat, or even decrease.

This is not surprising, given that online games are quick to publish and can achieve gross margins  of 50%, whereas blockbuster console games require sales of anywhere between 500,000 and 1m units to simply break even.

In fact, Chinese games companies such as Shanda, ChangYou.com and Giant are already achieving billion-dollar stock-market valuations. View the Digi-Capital Global Video Games Investment Review here.

So what do you think? Is 2014 an accurate estimate?
