Mobile gaming weekly round-up 2

31 May

In the second of our new weekly news round-ups, we cover three topics that have caught our attention here at Connect2Media towers, from the newest whispers about the upcoming iPhone 5 to Coca-Cola powered mobiles:

Psst…. iPhone 5 Rumours

There have been a number of rumours circulating this week about Apple’s next phone release, due for August. Firstly, industry sources in Japan have reported that the iPhone 5 will have a curved glass cover, and that Apple has had to buy at least 200 glass cutting machines because of reluctance from factories to invest in them.

A competing rumour is that the phone will instead have an edge-to-edge screen, which has stemmed from a mock-up by a case manufacturer on (left). This news may not seem very reliable, but similar manufacturers have in the past obtained insider info about new specs.

Third in the list is the possibility that the iPhone 5 might go completely sim free in a bid to make it as slim as possible.

Then again, a lot of talk suggests that the iPhone will just have a few minor modifications such as better cameras, and a slightly slimmer body, and in fact might be called the iPhone 4S rather than 5. What do you predict? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Windows Phone Mango

It’s hasn’t all about Apple this week. In fact, over in New York, Microsoft was busy previewing their Mango update for Windows phones.

This covers a massive 500 new features like real-time information on the start screen, and easier multi-tasking so that you can jump between games and your other apps at the touch of a button.

Those that have seen the updates have been very positive about them and there are more announcements still to come, including any improvements to the gaming hub. Unfortunately, we will waiting at least a few months before we start to see any of them.

The two ‘new’ functional phones

Okay, so these might not be technically this week’s news, but as we discovered these two new takes on the humble mobile this week, we decided to include them:

First up is the half phone, half shaver known as the Rong Zun 758 Razor Phone. This time-saving device lets you play games one minute, then simply open the cover, flick the switch, and start to shave the next! We can’t think of many occasions when this sort of functionality would be required, but hey, at least it’s original!

Second in our list is the phone that can be charged by Coca-Cola, or in fact any sugary drink. This novel invention is thanks to Chinese designer, Daizi Zheng who invented the phone as part of a University project. She says:

“In order to use the bio-battery as a power source for the phone all that is required is a small supply of a sugary drink. Once the battery dies only oxygen and water remains. Bio-batteries are fully biodegradable and have, on a single charge, a potential life-span three to four times longer than conventional lithium batteries. Meanwhile, bio-batteries are a whole new way of looking at batteries and afternoon tea.”

Which sounds great, but we want to know what games we can play on the device!
